Mt. Nachi is one of the three mountains of Kumano. It has a long history as a sacred place of Kumano worship. Originally a major training center for the Shinto and Buddhist traditions centering on Nachi Falls, the temple was separated into Seigantoji Temple and Nachi Taisha Shrine in the early Meiji period (1868-1912). Even today, the temple and shrine are adjacent to each other, and many people visit both.
